Got a water test report? Seven checks before choosing equipment

Keep the original report

Before asking what to buy, make sure the report can be understood in context. Store the complete document with its attachments rather than a cropped photograph of one result. Avoid publishing your exact address or personal details when asking general questions online.

Check seven things

1. Property and sample identifier. Can you connect this report to the correct property record?
2. Sampling point. Was the sample from the source, tank, treatment outlet or final drinking tap?
3. Date. What supply or maintenance changes have happened since collection?
4. Treatment status. What was operating when the sample was taken?
5. Parameters and units. Which measurements were performed, and which questions were outside scope?
6. Methods and reporting limits. Can the laboratory explain a nondetect or a qualified result?
7. Interpretation. Which comparison criteria were used and do they fit the intended use and jurisdiction?

Ask the report author first

Request clarification from the laboratory or responsible professional before accepting a sales interpretation. If additional sampling is recommended, ask what question it will resolve. A larger package is not automatically a better answer to an undefined question.

Make supplier responses comparable

Give each supplier the same complete report and property-use brief. Ask each to identify the result behind every proposed treatment stage, the outcome expected and the method for checking it after installation.

Keep the follow-up connected

Retain commissioning and later reports with the original, labeling any changes in sample location or method. A before-and-after comparison needs an explanation of what is comparable.
