Why does your villa water taste salty?

Treat a taste change as a reason to investigate

A salty taste does not identify the source or amount of dissolved substances. Do not repeatedly taste unknown water as a test. Record the change and ask a qualified laboratory or specialist which analyses fit your supply and intended use.

Check the history before equipment

Find out whether the supply source changed, a delivery was added, maintenance took place or the property was unused. Ask whether the change affects all outlets or one treated tap. These are useful observations, not proof of a cause.

Make the sampling question explicit

Explain that you are investigating a taste change. Ask whether conductivity, dissolved solids, chloride or other parameters are relevant. The laboratory should recommend a scope and specify bottles, sampling locations and transport requirements.

Compare like with like

Keep source-water and treated-water samples clearly labeled. Record date, time and any treatment operating at collection. A comparison only makes sense when the methods, units and sampling conditions are understood.

Questions for a treatment proposal

• Which measured parameter does this equipment address?
• What inlet conditions does it require?
• What output will be checked after commissioning?
• What are the waste-water, power and maintenance requirements?
• Who responds if performance changes?

Avoid geographical shortcuts
