Hard water: signs, testing and sensible next steps

What hardness means

Water hardness describes dissolved calcium and magnesium. Those minerals can leave deposits as water dries; USGS explains the underlying water science. This does not establish a hardness level for Bali, an area or your property.

Record the pattern

Take photographs of dry marks on shower glass, tap fittings or appliances. Note which outlets are involved and how quickly the marks return after cleaning. Tell the specialist whether the appearance changed after a supply or equipment change.

Ask for the relevant measurement

Ask for total hardness with its unit and sampling point. A conductivity or total dissolved solids reading is a different measurement; ask the report author to explain what was measured. Keep raw results and avoid converting units without documenting the conversion.

Prepare a useful request

• Where are marks visible?
• Is the problem new or longstanding?
• What is the water source?
• Is there existing treatment?
• Is your goal less cleaning, equipment protection or a drinking-water assessment?

Decide after the result

Ask a specialist whether hardness reduction is appropriate for your intended use and plumbing. Request the design flow, consumables, installation needs and maintenance plan. Do not assume a general filter quotation includes hardness treatment.

What not to conclude

A hardness result is not a complete drinking-water assessment. Neither an area label nor a photograph replaces a sample from your property. Keep separate questions separate when commissioning tests.

Make the comparison concrete

Ask each provider to explain the same test result and household use pattern. Their written proposal should say what improvement is intended and how it will be checked. Explore water softeners or request a check.
